Parents are required to add five new immunizations for the upcomingg school year as a result of state Metro Health anticipates these requirements will affect upto 50,009 students in the San Antonio area. Startingv Aug. 1, K-12 students will be requiref to take two doses of theVaricellaa (chickenpox) vaccine. Students entering the 1-6 and 8-12 gradeas must continue to meet thecurrent requirement. Enterinhg 7th grade students are required to take the one dose of the meningococcapl vaccine thisschool year. Students entering the 7th grade must havethe diphtheria, acellular pertussis-containing vaccine if they’ve not had the booster withi n the last five years.
Students entering gradesd 8 - 12 must have the booster shot if they have not had one in the last 10 Kindergarten students statewide are now requiresd to take two doses of hepatitisA Finally, K-12 students must take two doses of the measlees vaccine and one dose each of the mumps and rubellaz vaccine. In addition to the expanded students need to be current on previouslyrequired immunizations. “These additions to the childhooed immunization schedule will bring us closer in line with CDC recommendationx and make Texas an even safer environmenf for vaccinepreventable diseases,” health director Fernandok Guerra says.
