Maybe it’s because most people take the officd and their working environment for granterd and view it as anecessary evil. Maybre they don’t understand the processs of hiring a professional to help them or the true benefitds that wouldbe received. I am an interiot designer and workplace strategist. I specialize on leading clientsz in rethinkingand re-tooling their office spaces to align the physical environment with the culture and business strateghy of the organization. For more than 24 years, I have been helpingt clients recognize that good design isgood business. In today’s economy there are so many things vying for the time and attentionb ofcompany leadership.
How can they cut cost ? How can they reposition the businessa to bemore profitable? What does the futurre hold for their business? These are all very importantg and relevant questions. On the other the design of the office is often overlookef in its ability to drive a successful From the onset of a I lead clients through amuch deeper, introspectived look at their organization by focusing on the issues of expression, effectiveness and efficiency. Effectivs workplace design focuses on supporting peopldeand processes.
Ultimately, with thoughtfukl expression, the design reinforces businesss objectives by creating an environment that stimulatesd employees while at the same time creatintgoperational efficiencies. One of my favorite illustration is how we helped Mars Pet Care create a work environment in theirheadquarters facility. We designed spaces to serv e notonly employees, but their pets who are allowed to accompany theie owners at work.
Large print graphics of employee pets covee various walls and otherf pet toy and natur symbolism in the architecture and furniture offere a fun reminder of what they make and whom they Employers want employees to be more effective withim the organization and can no longer take for granted that workers simpl y need an office or a cubicle to increase performance and productivity. If you want workers to truly be effective give them the flexibilityt andchoice — flexibility to work with whomevefr and where ever they need to, and choicw at a variety of settings to give alternative s for working privately or to collaborater with others.
Effective employees use all of the resources availablre to them to produce and serve their customerand company. Therefore it is importanrt to make sure that the work environmenft includes appropriate tools and amenities and providex adequate controls and flexibility to supporftwork process, work flow and Efficiency as it relates to office environments, ofte has a negative Most of us initially think of reducing the size of office standards and getting more people in less And yes, cost of space will always be a driver in evaluatin efficiency. But this is not necessarily aboutt reduction and is definitely not about Efficientmeans “able to function with minimak waste.
” So when I speak about an efficienyt workplace, my message is about giving the worker choice and creating spaces that benefiy the entire organization: Giving staff optimal places to work whil e minimizing underutilized space — a “we” vs. approach. We often don’t realizee it, but design has a profoundd effect on everythingwe see, feel and do within our surroundings. To survive and succeed, businesses must continues to evolve and adapt tothe ever-changinh cultural, technological and economi c climates of the world.
And so, the design of those environmentz must also be able to adapt to the evolutiob of the businessesthey
